Length calculator
Enter the deck rib height and welding method to find the shortest stud that meets the minimum projection after welding.
Results are indicative; the final design rests with the responsible engineer's drawings.

What is a shear stud?
A shear stud is a headed steel rod welded to a steel beam to tie it to the concrete slab in composite construction, so beam and slab act together and carry more load.
How to choose diameter and length
It is set by the engineer in the drawings. For slabs on metal deck the stud must project above the deck after welding by the amount given in the rule above. Ø19 mm (3/4 in) is the most common size in buildings.
Metric and imperial
Metric sizes follow ISO 13918 and inch sizes follow AWS D1.1. 19 mm is roughly 3/4 in, 16 mm roughly 5/8 in and 22 mm roughly 7/8 in.
Through-deck and direct welding
In through-deck welding the stud is welded through the deck sheet onto the beam with a dedicated ferrule. In direct welding it is welded straight onto the beam with a standard ferrule. The ferrule must match the stud diameter and welding type.
Selection tips
- After welding, the stud must project at least 38 mm (1.5 in) above the top of the metal deck: length after weld >= deck rib height + 38 mm.
- Each stud diameter needs its matching ceramic ferrule; through-deck welding uses the through-deck ferrule type.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum projection above the deck?
The stud must project at least 38 mm above the deck after welding: length after weld >= rib height + 38 mm.
Why is the length after weld shorter than before?
Part of the stud tip melts during arc welding, so the stud shortens slightly (roughly 3 to 6 mm depending on size).
Do I need a ceramic ferrule for every stud?
Yes. The ceramic ferrule shields the weld and shapes the weld fillet. It must match the stud diameter.
What is the difference between a standard and a through-deck ferrule?
The standard ferrule is for welding directly to the beam; the through-deck ferrule is designed for welding through corrugated deck.
Are metric and inch sizes interchangeable?
Not without the responsible engineer's approval; the design specifies the required standard and size.
